Balram Das Tandon was a long-serving Indian politician. One of the founding members of the Jansangh which later became the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he held several high-profile positions throughout his political career. He held the post of Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab and was serving as the governor of Chhattisgarh at the time of his death.
Born on 1st November 1927, Tandon during his adulthood served as pracharak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). A founding member of the Jan Sangh in 1951, he contributed a lot in the rise of the party which later became the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). A six-time MLA, he served as Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab in the Justice (retd) Gurnam Singh Akali Dal-Jan Sangh ministry in 1969-70. He was jailed from 1975 to 1977 during Emergency. The veteran leader was undoubtedly one of the strong pillars of Bharatiya Janata Party in Punjab. During his long illustrious career, he also served as cabinet minister in 1977-79 and in 1997-2002 in the ministries headed by Parkash Singh Badal. On 14 July 2014, he was named as the Governor of Chhattisgarh.
